ANOTHER ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICES FAILURE TO PROTECT ANIMALS
Since middle of last year, many calls have been made to the Ontario Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) hotline to get help for the kittens/cats in the “care” of Eastern Ontario Cats, a “rescue” run by Johanna Cake.
Since 2023 things didn’t seen right. A lot of sick kittens/cats, deaths and kittens/cats just going missing. Then there were outbreaks of feline panleukopenia virus (cat parvo). The rescue owner appears to have not been vetting these cats properly and was placing them into retail stores for adoption. She was not responding to fosters and not providing them with needed supplies as well, she was not paying vet bills.
Humane Initiative has interviewed a number of volunteers/fosters and last year and they all spoke about irregularities with the finances and vetting that was not being paid for. This rose some red flags about what was going on. Eastern Ontario Cats is a registered charity – therefore a Board of Directors needed to be in place. The lack of Directors was one of those red flags.
