Animals in Distress – AWS Fails to Act – AGAIN!

OH MY GOSH ONTARIO – WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS

Why do the animals of this province have to be let down time and time again by the very taxpayer funded agencies whose job it is to protect them and hold those that harm them accountable?

Since Sept 2023 – At this one address Hamilton Animal Services have issued 20 Administrative Penalty Notices (APN’s) in regard to bylaw infractions (too many dogs, excessive noise, lack of licensing etc).

Between May 22 – July 2 AWS visited this property 6 times out of concern for the welfare of the dogs. SIX TIMES!!!!

Each time no one answered the door so AWS simply put a notice of the door for the occupant to call them.

On July 3rd Hamilton Police received a  call about dogs left in backyard. Hamilton police entered the property’s backyard under the authority of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act.

  • Upon arrival they found 10 – 15 small breed dogs in backyard with no access to food or water
  • The animals were in distress!
  • Surrounded by mouldy food and feces covering the backyard
  • One large breed dog was deemed to be in critical distress and was transported to an emergency vet by Hamilton Animal Control

On the next day, July 4, 2025 AWS responded to the property with a warrant.

NOTE:

AWS HAD THE AUTHORITY TO ACT BEFORE THIS BUT CHOSE TO KEEP PUTTING STICKY NOTES ON THE FRONT DOOR ASKING THE OWNER TO CALL THEM.

ALL THE WHILE, THE ANIMALS INSIDE THAT HOUSE WERE ENDURING HORRENDOUS, LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS

What was discovered inside should make every one of us furious at the complete failure of the animal protection services in Ontario.

  • Floors covered in layers of feces and saturated in urine
  • High level of ammonia concentration
  • Lack of food and water (this is in the dead of summer, no air conditioning)
  • Many dogs in crates, some dogs hiding in the walls
  • Dogs with thin body conditions, heavily matted, infested with fleas

59 dogs were removed. Some very newborn puppies included.

We are now 70 days in…..no charges have been laid against the property owner.

AWS WHAT ARE YOU DOING??????

The animals are in the custody of the province. Vetting has included many surgeries along with fundamental care.

Do you think charges should be laid against the property owner – Alina Vernigorova?

If so, we are asking you to please email the decision makers.

  1. They are not reflecting my values at all. None of these dogs should be returned to this place. Why are they not been taken to court and put into jail? I struggle with this type of abuse and no action.

    1. Shirley, I know it is very upsetting. But we need to see this so we can respond. The animals cannot speak up for themselves – we alone are their voice.
