Too Little, Too Late.

This is (or should I say WAS Rudy). Rudy died of parvo.

Rudy died because a puppy mill operator in Ontario never had him vaccinated. Meanwhile he paid a licensed veterinarian in Ontario to provide fake papers to show he was vaccinated.

Rudy was then sold online by a puppy mill broker masquerading as an ethical breeder.

Dr. Tejwant Chahal DVM is a well known (for all the wrong reasons) mobile vet operating out of Brampton.

We have case after case of Dr. Chahal being the vet named as the one servicing many, many of the large commercial puppy mills out in “puppy mill central” (Region of Waterloo, Huron Co, Perth Co, Wellington Co, Dufferin Co).

Chahal was also shown on paperwork from puppies sold via puppy mill brokers in Perth Co, Peel Region, North York to fake vaccine certificates before selling to the unsuspecting public.

Rudy is one victim…there are many more.

So many complaints made to the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) about Chahal. Clear evidence provided of Chahal’s activities – of his professional misconduct, but each time the CVO denied to pursue disciplinary action because the victim (the person making the complaint) – the person who bought the puppy was not actually a “patient” of Dr. Chahal’s – so there was no professional relationship.

But you see, the “professional relationship” was between the unscrupulous puppy millers / brokers and Chahal. Chahal was accused of selling his stamped, signed (YET BLANK) vaccine certificate folders to these millers / brokers who would then in turn simply fill in arbitrary dates to align with the ages of the different litters the miller / broker was selling. But of course these scumbags were not going to report Chahal…he was their valuable accomplice in conning unknowing members of the public. (The lack of due diligence by many purchasers is another blog post all together!)

But victims and animal advocates kept the pressure on the CVO to act. Publicly shaming the institution and the government ministry overseeing them via the Veterinary Act (Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Agribusiness) to do their job and stop protecting vets who are acting against their oath, by profiting off of the pain/suffering and death of animals.

We created petitions, massive social media campaigns, held public demonstrations outside of the CVO’s headquarters in Guelph demanding action.

Finally last year a crack – not much of a crack – but some sort of accountability:

From the College of Veternarians of Ontario:

https://www.cvo.org/investigations-and-hearings/discipline-orders/dr-tejwant-chahal

The “discipline” put worth by the CVO on Chahal amounts to virtually nothing. Dr. Tejwant Chahal should have been stripped of his license and criminally charged for causing pain and suffering on animals – but of course he was not.

Dr. Tejwant Chahal is ONE example…there are others. Vets who profit by actively aiding unethical breeders / sellers or by looking the other way when they know the person they are dealing with are millers / brokers.

The CVO acted because they were forced to by public shaming. And the actions they took, amounted to a slap on the wrist.

We call on the College of Veternarians of Ontario to stop protecting their own! Remember, why you became a vet – because you loved animals.

We call on the Ontario government to strengthen the PAWS Act (Section 14) and to strengthen the Veterinarians Act to improve internal governance and external accountability to the taxpayers of Ontario.

  1. Please do everything you can do to stop this animal abuse I will never understand when there is proof that nothing is followed through. Do the right thing please

    1. I it not just up to animal advocates to “do the right thing”..it takes members of the public to write letters to elected officials, media and make social media posts.

      It takes a village..
