ABOVE…THIS IS ONTARIO’S PUPS ACT LEGISLATION IN ACTION!!!
Nothing has changed for the poor creatures used over and over again to make money for unethical breeders, slimy brokers and complicit online selling platforms.
Last night as I tossed / turned – unable to sleep like far too many nights, I listened to a podcast.
I listened to THE BEST PEOPLE with MS NOW tv anchor Nicolle Wallace. On this week’s show her guest was legendary actor Robert De Niro. He has been a powerful voice calling out what is happening to democracy in the US.
Wallace asked him how he saw things and how this fight for democracy realigned his own life because of the times he is witnessing. De Niro responded that he found himself connecting, aligning with people that perhaps he may not normally have come in contact with; but circumstances have called upon people, called upon himself to come together as they share a common goal that is of critical and defining importance.
He continued on stating that he would not have envisioned himself in such a place, doing what he is doing at this stage of his life, at this age. He suspects many other members of the public find themselves in this place as well – in this moment. When things that are so against your moral code of right/wrong how can you possibly stay silent, how can you stand on the sidelines and watch continue what you know is so wrong and against your very core beliefs?
De Niro was talking about the demise of democratic norms in his country. People witnessing what is happening yet they do nothing and let it continue.
This specific issue De Niro is talking about is democracy but you can pick up his question and lay it over so many issues can’t you? Politics, social justice, the environment, world peace, animal welfare….the list is endless.
But my issue and my passion is the safety and humane treatment of animals. Specifically in my home province of Ontario.
This work is my life, it is my heartbeat. But no matter what level of involvement you have or are willing to have, I truly cannot understand, how can anyone who claims (and no doubt do) love animals stand by, stay silent while the animals, who have no way to ask for help continue to suffer by abuse, neglect, exploitation.
How we LET our elected officials choose power/greed over doing what is humane?
How can we continue to LET this government turn a blind eye to animal selling platforms (such as Kijiji) whose policies protect their revenue streams over policies that protect animals and force out unscrupulous breeders and brokers?
Yes LET. We are very powerful – we are voters. Elected officials want our vote yet time and time again we LET them continue making empty promises with really no consequences.
Premier Ford does a big glossy press conference announcing his government is stopping….fill in the blank:
- puppy mills are now prohibited – they are illegal in Ontario
- the mammals at Marineland matter and their cruel existence will stop
- Lab testing on dogs and cats will be stopped
- animal cruelty in Ontario will not be tolerated
Every one of those 4 issues are not true. And for many, they are believed because we SO DESPERATELY want to believe it is true…it is not true.
The PUPS Act is absolutely useless because Doug Ford refuses to bring in mandatory licensing of breeders so the enforcement can actually happen.
The whales/belugas at Marineland are being shipped off to new amusement parks.
Bill 75, tabled to address lab testing is so weak and full of loopholes.
This government and many before them, whom we elect and LET set policy lacks the moral courage to stop the inhumane treatment of animals in this province.
