Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner fails to ensure the police services under HIS mandate know what the hell their role & responsibilities are in regard to animal welfare.
Under the PAWS Act, ALL police services in the province have a role AND a responsibility.
But time and time again we see the police refuse to act when the public contacts them in regard to an animal in distress.
JUST THIS WEEK IN HAMILTON:
Two citizens witness a man in Gage Park beating the crap out of his dog. With a closed fist, this individual punched his dog time and time again. Then started kicking the dog.
Both people called Hamiltion Police to report a dog in distress and needed police assistance to stop this attack. In both instances, the Hamilton Police told the people to calls PAWS and then the officer hung up on them.
Under the PAWS Act the police were to respond to this and arrest the person committing this ILLEGAL act of animal cruelty.
We here at Humane initiative see this over and over again. Different police services throughout the province refuse to do their jobs or do not seem to know that they have a role and a responsibility to fulfil.
Solicitor General Michael Kerzner knows that the lack of a consolidated communication strategy from the Ministry to the police services in Ontario is a problem. Michael Kerzner has admitted this to our faces while in a meeting.
We are calling on Solicitor General Michael Kerzner to immediately issue a statement making it clear what role police has under the PAWS Act and that they will be held accountable to fulfilling their responsibility.
