Ontario’s broken animal welfare system fails another animal. Here is the story of a young German shepherd – her name was Dakota. Her life snuffed out by cruel owners. Concerned neighbours calling the authorities to help Dakota…they failed her.
There are 000’s of “Dakota’s” in this province.
Please take a look at this in depth article by THE POINTER. Journalist Joel Wittnebel pulls back the layers of a government run system with poor legislation, weak enforcement and a misguided sense of justice.

Justice for this dog
Animals need true protection now! Canada has an overpopulation crisis that can only be resolved through stronger laws and supports for rescue efforts
This is the saddest most disgusting thing I’ve ever heard happen to someone’s beloved pet. Something needs to change. RIP Dakota💔
All animals need protection and they’re not getting it!
Changes are required. These poor animals need justice.
Cindy, you are right. But we must come together to demand these changes to the PAWS Act. To demand real, fully resourced enforcement. Demand accountability and transparency.
This GOV will not make these changes out of the goodness of their hearts.
This GOV is steered by the powerful groups that they are trying to keep happy. Google Ontario’s Ag Gag legislation.
This is our tax money paying for this.
We need to collectively use our voices. Join us Cindy!
This treatment of animals sickens me. What can we do?
People need to make their own posts, share in their own circles and ask people to become engaged. Reads the PAWS Act. Also please look over our website…loads of information on the plight of animals in Ontario and how the government has and are failing to protect them.
JUSTICE FOR DAKOTA 💙
thank you for standing up and being the voice for this Dog
God bless
Hi Ann, thank you for reaching out. We will continue fighting but need help from the public. We need your voice, your FB posts & shares, emails to authorities. Please let us know if you are not sure of how specifically to help.
These people need to be locked up. Also Banned from having any more Animals. They need stricter laws to protect the animals.
Hi Anita, Linda and I have been working on Ontario’s animal welfare legislation for 3 yrs now. We are painfully aware that the gov must be shamed into making the required improvements. There is no doubt that they will never make the required changes out of the goodness of their hearts. There is massive lobbying of the prov/fed gov’s by special interest groups. In the animal welfare space, the agriculture industry does their best to crush any animal welfare improvements. It is a sad state we find ourselves in – and the animals continue to suffer.
I’m so sad to read this post . Canada needs stronger animal protection laws! The current penalties are too low to effectively deter animal abuse. While each province has its own regulations, overall, the punishments remain too lenient, and enforcement is often lacking.
Animals are not objects; they are sentient beings that deserve proper legal protection. The government should impose higher fines, stricter penalties, and stronger enforcement to ensure those who mistreat animals are held accountable.
Completely agree with your thoughts. The ONT gov refuses to consider bringing in sentient designation for animals. As I mentioned in a previous reply to a comment – the agriculture industry lobby’s the gov very hard to ensure animals continue to be seen as property. It was the agri industry that pushed the gov to bring in the Ag Gag laws. Lucky Animal Justice has been able to push back some of those restrictions. We need to keep battling, making posts, sharing posts and raising public awareness!
