Canadian Kennel Club

The first and most important thing that must be conveyed…it does not mean that a breeder who belongs to the CKC is ethical, breeds to an aproved standard, breeds in an ethical manner and can be trusted!

It is also very important to note that there are many CKC breeders who are highly ethical. They breed for the love of the specific breed they are involved with and are not doing it to make a profit as a profit is rarely achieved.

The CKC admitted after a news investigative report found that the CKC does NOT vet new members who want to sell on their Puppy List.

There are a significant number of CKC members who are on the puppy list and are not even breeders. They are brokers or importers of dogs.

Here at Humane Initiative, we hear from many people that they thought if they saw that a seller was a CKC member that this somehow signified that they can be trusted, that they breed to CKC standards and breed ethically. Being a registered CKC breeder is not a rubber stamp for ethics.

Puppy millers, backyard breeders and puppy mill brokers will pay the nominal fee to the CKC so they can proclaim that they are CKC Members KNOWING that some members of the public will take this to mean that they are ethical, adhere to standards and are accountable…NOT TRUE!

It falls entirely to the public to do their due diligence when looking for a puppy. See our RED FLAGS page.
