After initially stating they were opening an investigation into the tragic death of Heiniu at the hands of Aurora Animal Control, Animal Welfare Services did a 180 degree turn and stated they “do NOT have the authority to investigate another service or its procedures”.
Meanwhile the public kept the pressure on and over 2,000 people filled out a quick form that sent ‘done-for-them’ emails to 8 (and in some cases 9) elected officials and high ranking government employees INCLUDING the Chief Animal Welfare Services Inspector, Melanie Milczynski and her boss the Solicitor General of Ontario.
The emails respectfully requested an independent investigation (done by other than the town of Aurora) be launched into Heiniu’s death.
Humane Initiative looked at The PAWS Act legislation, Regulations and Exemptions and could not find anything to support that position. We contacted the Inspector who was assigned the complaint and who initially responded that AWS could NOT investigate — we questioned why they couldn’t investigate.
A couple of days later, AWS did another 180 degree turn and indicated that they would be investigating the matter after all.
We want to thank everyone who spoke up, who phoned, who emailed, who contacted the press and we hope you will continue speaking up – we believe that YOUR letters, YOUR calls made a difference.
Town management desperately wants this to go away with little to no repercussions.
What was done to Heiniu by Aurora Animal Control officers was cruel and inhumane and reflects very poorly on this wonderful town!
This Council works for the residents and taxpayers and from the massive outrage demonstrated by the public. The public want answers and changes.
Please lend your time and voice to getting the answers and the justice that Heiniu and his family deserve.
HEINIU COULD HAVE BEEN YOUR DOG & THIS CAN HAPPEN AGAIN!
OUTRAGED? PLEASE SPEAK UP!
Go here – see the call to action – fill out the form and send a done for you email to elected officials and others who can bring about change.
