Northeastern Ontario Continues to receive little animal welfare services

Northeastern Ontario has very little presence by Provincial Animal Welfare Services (AWS).

Calls for help go unresponded to. Puppy mills, backyard breeders, severe abuse and neglect are simply not answered!

Animal rescues in that region are inundated with calls for help continuously.

Injured and unwanted animals are left at the end driveways of known rescuers. Puppies/kittens left in cardboard boxes.

People calling the rescues with pleas for help for animals they know are being harmed – when asked if they called PAWS – yes, but they are have done nothing. We hear these stories time and time again.

YET! Premier Doug Ford refuses to hire more AWS Inspectors – refuses!!!! Told to us by Solicitor General Michael Kerzner himself that he has put in the request for the budget to hire more inspectors and Dougie refuses. But meanwhile the Premier promises the people of this province that he will do what is needed – but does not deliver.

AND ON TOP OF ALL THIS…..the government cannot/will not get their act together and ensure that fines/penalties levied against animal owners who have had their animals seized or been investigated are actually collected.

As the Canadian Press reported this past weekend, over $10 MILLION in outstanding fines have been left uncollected and have fallen on Ontario taxpayers to pay. Since 2020, over 90% of fines levied – remain unpaid!!!!

TO:

Premier Ford, Solicitor General Michael Kerzner, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy:

Your own government data shows that the less than 10% of outstanding AWS Statement of Account debt is being collected.

AWS Inspector ranks are not fully staffed to address the need in this province. Why does this government refuse to staff appropriately? The more remote areas are severely under serviced.

The PAWS Act legislation is still lacking robust Standards of Care, missing key elements in the PUPS Act (licensing of breeders/sellers) and the regulations are full of incomplete sections.

Premier Ford you committed to zero tolerance in regard to animal abuse. But your legislation, policy and actions do not support this claim.
