CONTINUED SILENCE FROM MAYOR OF AURORA

As the public demands to know what the Town of Aurora Council plan is to address the death of 3 year old Rottweiler Heiniu — the silence is deafening.

In particular, the article highlights comments from Dr. Mark Dilworth, DVM — recipient of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association Award of Merit and former Board Member of the Toronto Humane Society remarks raise serious concerns about the actions taken by Aurora Animal Control Officers.

Dr. Dilworth, a veterinarian with 25 years of experience working with fearful, aggressive, and rescued animals, stated:

“There is no sensible explanation for why a dog dies at the hands of two catchpoles.”

DID YOU GET THAT?

Dr. Dilworth further explained that aggression in dogs is most often rooted in fear, and noted that based on witness descriptions, the officers themselves may have escalated the situation.

Dr. Dilworth also stated that in all his years working with animals — including wildlife and large dogs — he has…

“never witnessed, once in my life, an animal dying from restraint by a professional.”

The article also notes that the Town of Aurora stated one officer suffered a bite injury while attempting to “safely calm, care for, and secure the dog while protecting public safety.

However, this raises further questions.

If the Town intends to portray Heiniu as dangerously aggressive, why do witnesses report that at one point an officer allegedly dropped the leash and left to retrieve catch poles?

If public safety was truly at immediate risk, why was the dog not kept securely restrained?

These are questions the public deserves answers to.
