A routine call about two dogs running loose in East Gwillimbury ended in tragedy this week when a Rottweiler died during an interaction with Aurora Animal Services officers, leaving witnesses traumatized and a grieving family demanding accountability.

The incident happened May 4 at a home on Yonge Street in Holland Landing.

Michelle Sanders said her family helped secure two wandering dogs after her daughter spotted them running near their property.

“We thought we were doing the right thing,” Michelle said. “We gave them water, kept them calm and called animal control for help.”

  1. I am literally sickened by this story. But sadly I’m not surprised. Animal control Aurora has *always* been horribly run. I’m much older now but when I was 14 I got a job at Animal Control back when it was on Yonge St. I was only there a few months and because of what I saw go on I quit and went to work for the OSPCA. In the few months I was employed there I witnessed all kinds of troubling and disturbing things. I think it comes down to the fact that animal control is simply there for animal population control. That’s it. They don’t really care about the animals. They think nothing of putting perfectly healthy pets down if they get too crowded. Places like the OSPCA and rescues actually care about the animals. That’s what I really loved about the OSPCA is that they would not put down healthy animals like the animal control does. And the cages, etc. much cleaner I can’t tell you how many times we had pups get parvo outbreaks and die because of crappy wooden cages that literally absorbed disease to be passed around at Animal Control. I’m sure they’ve updated the cages by now but the toxic environment of being run by people that don’t give a shit has never changed clearly. I hope these two demons that literally tortured this dog to death are charged criminally because they should have known better. Any fool knows you don’t pull in opposite directions with the loop. It sounds like they got frustrated and took it out on the poor dog. They need to be held accountable. Time to shut down that sorry place, or let the OSPCA take over running it so that way animal care is done properly.
