Will there ever be true Justice for Heiniu?

It has been over 5 month since Heiniu was killed by 2 animal control officers in Aurora.

So where do things stand?

  • No criminal investigation by York Regional Police (YRP) despite overwhelming evidence to support this
  • No charges to date filed by Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) despite them saying “there is an ongoing investigation”.
  • The Town of Aurora still has not accepted responsibility for what their employees did. This is no doubt because they are awaiting possible litigation from Heiniu’s owners
  • The Town of Aurora has exhibited extraordinarily poor goodwill or compassion in regard to what happened
  • Public engagement has waned and continues to do so as there is no clear direction provided on where to direct their outrage
  • Instead of providing a clear Call to Action there are posts upon posts of good intentioned members of the public posting photos of their “Justice for Heiniu” lawn signs
  • Heiniu’s owners, in their grief chase accountability, reforms and answers to posed questions with a powerless deadline attached that means nothing to a municipal government that does not give a shit
  • Two protests planned for next month that do not address – in any way, the charging of the officers
  • And the two animal control officers who for well over 1 hr actively killed a friendly family pet are breathing a sigh of relief that they may just have very well gotten away with it.

Chaotic handling of social media messages and mixed agenda’s have derailed a once truly robust movement for justice.

Where is the public outrage to demand charges be laid?

It is non-existent.

A lawn sign, a car bumper magnet, the wearing of a t-shirt and comment after comment on posts showing angry emoji’s and calls for jail time are well intended but accomplishing nothing.

What those two officers did was a crime. Full stop – it was a crime. (Criminal Code Statute: 445.1)

York Regional Police have completely negated their duty to investigate a possible crime.

Provincial Animal Welfare Services will more than likely not lay charges.

I TRULY hope that I am wrong and that PAWS finds the moral courage to lay Provincial Offences charges under the PAWS Act Sections [ 15 (1), 15 (2) and 15 (3) ] – which is centred around causing and permitting distress and exposing an animal to undue risk of distress.

But public – only your voices, your outrage will provide a chance at a hint of justice for this poor dog.

Keep your lawn signs, wear your t-shirts but use your voice!

Example Email that you can copy/paste into your email:

On May 4, 2026 a friendly family pet was inhumanely handled for over 90 minutes in Aurora by municipal Animal Control officers.

The evidence is overwhelming that the actions, then inaction of these two individuals resulted in an animal (exhibiting zero aggression) being tortured and put into such a state of distress that he died on the pavement with two catch pole nooses around his neck and bleeding from the mouth and nose.

We are demanding the laying of charges under the PAWS Act Sections 15 (1), 15 (2) and 15 (3).

It has been over 5 months and the eyes of many Ontarian’s are looking at this government to act.

To demonstrate that your promises of “zero tolerance of animal abuse” were not empty words.
