Humane Initiative was asked by The Pointer newspaper to write an opinion editorial (Op Ed) about the current state of Ontario’s animal Welfare Crisis. We did one previously – in October 2025.

Sadly, the crisis is not showing any signs of easing. In fact, the situation is worsening.
The Ontario government refuses to face the situation – the dire situation that animals are facing. Despite continued calls for this government to improve weak legislation, close loopholes in the legislative language, improve enforcement resources, remove the barriers to transparency and accountability – Doug Ford is refusing.
Doug Ford:
- Refuses to license commercial dog breeders. Making the PUPS Act meaningless
- Pushes back on critical improvements in the Basic Standards of Care requirements
- Lifted the 1997 ban on “penned hunting”
- Is destroyed the habitat of Ontario’s wildlife
- Will not remove the mandate within the Ontario Animals for Research Act that allows labs to obtain dogs/cats from pounds and some humane societies despite the clear message from Ontarian’s
Animal Rescues are the backbone of animal welfare – they are leaned on heavily to pick up the broken pieces. Yet they receive ZERO support from this government.
We are calling on the people of Ontario to demand change. The animals are depending on us!

Doug Ford we need changes to the Animal Welfare Act ASAP and protection for ALL ANIMALS!! Animal Rescues are extremely important as well as they are the voices of and care of innocent animals!! Chabges are needed! Protections are needed!! Please do right We need your support! Stop the suffering of all animals! We do not need to test on animals or sell them to labs!! Animal Abuse needs to stop ASAP!! Save our wildlife habitats as well! Speak up for the animals and do right!
Doug Ford it is imperative that as a speaker for the people of Ontario that you listen to the people and put into place stronger and more effective policies that will protect our pets, our wildlife and that will support those who give their hearts and souls to, their blood sweat and tears , their voices to the innocent! Stop protecting the abusers and the profit oriented breeders whose animals live in horrid conditions and suffer at the hands of those living off their litters only to be killed after their “usefulness “ to the breeder

He is far too focused on the special interest groups that could derail him.
The situation for animals in Ontario is the worst it’s ever been 💔.
Rescues can not keep handling everything on their own!! Puppymills and Backyard breeding needs to stop! They are breeding them faster than we can save them 🥹.
The Government needs to step in and make spay and neuter mandatory not optional!!
Rescues spend thousands sometimes on one animal alone, how do you expect Rescues to financially keep their doors open.
So many amazing Rescues have already had to close down permanently, alot of others are full over capacity and temporarily closed to intakes. If there are no Rescues who will you call for help when someone you love is in a dire situation with an animal??
Using animals for research is disgusting 😭
There are enough animal abusers and pedophiles you could be using for medical research!! They deserve it the animals are innocent!!!

So is taking away the endangered species act!! Have we not taken enough resources away from animals 😡😡😡.

Animal control needs to be available after hours and on weekends because that’s when alot of animals need help!
There need to respond to calls about roaming dogs who are out running on their own right now they only come if someone has the dog contained. Leaving catching strange dogs up to unknowledgable members of the public is a public safety issue that puts both human and dogs at risk 😞. It is in their mandate to pick up stray dogs yet they don’t seem to come unless someone has the dog contained.
Paws needs to step up and do their job!!
Start charging animal abusers criminally!!!
Jessica Kippen never should of been allowed to leave Canada yet authorities allowed her to go to the states ( WTF 🤬).
Police also need to be allowed to do more when it comes to animals! Animal control, Paws, cops they all put it on someone else when people are calling to report!
Serious Neglect of animals needs to be considered abuse again!!!
The beginning of August 2025, Doug Ford stated at a press conference that he was going to legislate banning medical testing done on cats a dogs, some that are from shelters, family pets!!! But like many of Doug Fords promises, he has not followed through with banning them! Cats and Dogs are still being taken from shelters for cruel testing!!! Disgusting!!!
