Humane Initiative has been contacted by a number of people who have first hand, eyewitness accounts of the conditions at Nakoma Rescue in Addison, ONT (just north of Brockville). We have collected their statements and we feel the public needs to know so steps can be taken to protect the dogs.
Provincial Animal Welfare Services (AWS) have been called to this property twice in the last year by concerned members of the public.
YET, despite many of the “shelters” at Nakoma not conforming to the Ontario legislation outlining the Standards of Care for Dogs Kept Outdoors (displayed below), AWS has chosen not to act to protect the dogs.
Now the provincial Standards of Care are not great, in fact they are very inadequate. And even despite this very low bar….many of the shelters on this property do not meet that low bar!
Along with the failure to meet standards, these photos also depict minimal, heavily soiled straw and filthy conditions.
We are asking people to take a look at these photos – can you imagine an animal trying to survive the cruel Ontario winters in these? Or protect the dogs against injury?

I have yet to work out why the taxpayer is paying for PAWs. They consistently fail to address appalling situations that animals are in. This is yet another example of PAWS not doing their job, legislation not being specific enough and Ontario’s disgusting stance on not deeming animals sentient (presumably because the ag business has got its hands in the provinces back pocket). PAWS do your job. Protect animals. Michael Kerzner, do you job and put proper legislation in place. Doug Ford, you know the state of animal welfare, I know you have had conversations with very informed people and you committed to get something done but you haven’t. No shock there.
